PECKHAMPLEX ANNOUNCES TOP UP BURSARIES TO FIRST RECIPIENTS

PECKHAMPLEX ANNOUNCES TOP UP BURSARIES TO FIRST RECIPIENTS
Rachel (Adekemi) Onibokun & Ejim Akuma

To mark the cinema’s 30th anniversary in September 2024 Peckhamplex established a bursary scheme to help young people from the local area supplement the funding of their university courses helping to cover their incidentals and living costs. The aim is to complement other sources of funding by reducing the amount of time students need to spend in paid employment during term time, to leave more time for study, for extra-curricular activity such as joining societies, sport and socialising, to purchase a laptop, additional books or materials or go on a field trip.

Peckhamplex is delighted to have made the first two awards to students beginning their degree courses this month.

Rachel (Adekemi) Onibokun will study for a BSc with Honours degree in Midwifery at the University of Nottingham. She attended City of London Academy (Southwark).

Ejim Akuma will study for a BA Honours degree in Filmmaking at Leeds Beckett University. He attended Kingsdale Foundation School (Southwark).

John Reiss, Chairman of Peckhamplex said:
This scheme is intended to support young people in pursuing their career ambitions and their quality of life through higher education. In so doing the scheme will in its small way help to break down barriers to higher education and enable more young people to realise their full potential in the world.

The assessment panel had a significant number of worthy applications to review and were particularly impressed by the applications of Rachel and Ejim who both showed great commitment to their chosen subjects and a genuine interest in helping in the community.

We congratulate them and wish them every success with their degree courses and future careers.

More about the Scheme:
To be eligible to be considered for a Peckhamplex bursary, applicants must demonstrate that they:

1) are a UK citizen
2) have lived in London SE15 for at least the last 3 years.
3) have attended secondary school or sixth form college in SE15.
4) have been offered a place at a UK University to undertake an undergraduate degree course.

Applications will be assessed by a committee comprising Peckhamplex Directors (John Reiss, Simone Brown, Marianne Gray, Rakesh Makhecha) and two independent advisors - Maureen Salmon (Associate Dean, University of The Arts London), Freda Matassa (art collections management advisor/ trainer and graduate of Glasgow University).
Funds will be disbursed at the start of each academic term for three years provided the awardee is still doing the university course and attending regularly.

The process is intended to be fair, equitable and inclusive. It will however be confidential, and the decision will rest entirely with the Committee and will be final.

Peckhamplex Scholarships Committee members will offer to provide personal and career guidance to awardees.
